Hi all!
Thank you to everyone who met us in person yesterday for our second meeting of the semester! Here are a couple announcements we went over before the MSU CHM presentation:
We still have so much merch! If you ordered a t-shirt we would love to get it to you ASAP, we'll be bringing them to all of our meetings to be distributed
WMED campus tour is coming up February 13th! Check the meeting recap email to find the link to rsvp as well as to join a carpool group
GVSU's getting ready to apply workshop is happening now every Friday at 12pm, the QR code to sign up can be found in the linked slideshow below
We then handed it over to Molly Monet from MSU CHM! During her presentation on Michigan State's College of Human Medicine (MD program), she talked about the school's mission, curriculum, locations, application and selection processes, as well as the EAP partnership that they have with GVSU. Here are some of the highlights:
Mission: MSU CHM has a heavy emphasis on service and giving back to the community, they are less focused on research compared to other Michigan medical schools
Location: The matriculated class is split 50/50 between their GR campus and their East Lansing campus for the first two years, but they offer many other urban and rural locations for third and fourth year clerkships
Curriculum: CHM has a pass/fail curriculum and they do not rank their students. They have a mostly flipped classroom where students do a lot of the learning on their own and get more hands on practice in the classroom
Application and Selection: They received over 8,000 applications last year, interviewing over 500 and ultimately matriculating 190 students. They require either Casper OR PREview, heavily look for clinical experiences as well as service hours, and conduct virtual MMI and one-on-one interviews. The average GPA and MCAT scores of matriculated students are 3.76 and 507.
EAP: the EAP program can be fantastic for students who really connect with the school's mission and want early assurance into CHM's program. The application opens the week of Thanksgiving every year and is due end of January. Applicants do not need to have taken the MCAT upon application, but must get >500 with >125 subscores in order to be matriculated.
Thanks again to all who attended the meeting, it's always extra appreciated when we have a presenter coming in!
See you all in two weeks for an interview prep presentation at our meeting on February 17th!
