Meeting Recaps

Hi all!

This week we had someone from the career center come in and give us a presentation on interview preparation! But first, here are just a couple of club announcements:

  • We have so much merch left! Please come grab your t-shirt if you bought one ASAP, we'll have them at each meeting until the end of the semester and you can also reach out to Diandre if you need to figure out a separate time lawrendi@mail.gvsu.edu

  • Club dues must be paid each semester, so make sure to get your $10 in either to Faith, our financial officer in person, or via our club venmo @gvpremedclub

  • Health Professionals Graduate Fair is coming up on March 25th from 11:30am-1:30pm in Henry Hall

  • We will be holding eboard elections for open positions at the last meeting of the semester on April 7th. If you're an active and attending member who wants to join club leadership, start thinking about that!

After our announcements, Shea from the career center gave us their interview prep presentation that consisted on information on how to prepare for interviews, dos and don'ts on what to wear, what to say, and how to conduct yourself, as well as some tips and tricks to improve your responses and present yourself as the best possible candidate for whatever you're interviewing for!

The GVSU career center has many resources for interview prep including academic advising as well as mock interview appointments available to book on Handshake!

I will link the career center website here where they have all of their information and more details:

Thank you to all who attending this week's meeting and we look forward to seeing you in two weeks on 3/3 for our eboard experiences presentation!

Hi all!

Thank you to everyone who met us in person yesterday for our second meeting of the semester! Here are a couple announcements we went over before the MSU CHM presentation:

  • We still have so much merch! If you ordered a t-shirt we would love to get it to you ASAP, we'll be bringing them to all of our meetings to be distributed

  • WMED campus tour is coming up February 13th! Check the meeting recap email to find the link to rsvp as well as to join a carpool group

  • GVSU's getting ready to apply workshop is happening now every Friday at 12pm, the QR code to sign up can be found in the linked slideshow below

We then handed it over to Molly Monet from MSU CHM! During her presentation on Michigan State's College of Human Medicine (MD program), she talked about the school's mission, curriculum, locations, application and selection processes, as well as the EAP partnership that they have with GVSU. Here are some of the highlights:

Mission: MSU CHM has a heavy emphasis on service and giving back to the community, they are less focused on research compared to other Michigan medical schools

Location: The matriculated class is split 50/50 between their GR campus and their East Lansing campus for the first two years, but they offer many other urban and rural locations for third and fourth year clerkships

Curriculum: CHM has a pass/fail curriculum and they do not rank their students. They have a mostly flipped classroom where students do a lot of the learning on their own and get more hands on practice in the classroom

Application and Selection: They received over 8,000 applications last year, interviewing over 500 and ultimately matriculating 190 students. They require either Casper OR PREview, heavily look for clinical experiences as well as service hours, and conduct virtual MMI and one-on-one interviews. The average GPA and MCAT scores of matriculated students are 3.76 and 507.

EAP: the EAP program can be fantastic for students who really connect with the school's mission and want early assurance into CHM's program. The application opens the week of Thanksgiving every year and is due end of January. Applicants do not need to have taken the MCAT upon application, but must get >500 with >125 subscores in order to be matriculated.

Thanks again to all who attended the meeting, it's always extra appreciated when we have a presenter coming in!

See you all in two weeks for an interview prep presentation at our meeting on February 17th!

Hi all!

We met via zoom this week and began the meeting by going through the tentative schedule for this coming semester which can also be found at the top of the Meetings page of our website.

Just some other quick reminders as we begin a new semester:

  • Meetings are bi-weekly on Tuesdays from 7-8pm in Kindschi 1121

  • Dues are $10 per semester and can be paid in cash to the financial officer (Faith) or by venmo @gvpremedclub

  • In order to be considered an active member, you must earn 4 "engagement points" per semester which can be earned by attending meetings, paying dues, buying merch, attending volunteer events or club activities, etc.

  • & follow us on instagram! @gvsupremed

Congrats to Hannah Angell on winning the set of MCAT books for leading in fundraising during our last fundraising event and thank you to everyone who participated!

We will be sending out more information on carpooling to the WMED campus tour coming up on February 13th shortly!

The bulk of our meeting then consisted of a presentation on personal statements by a student editor at the writing center. She went over how to get started, what topics to be thinking about, and the resources that GVSU provides for the revision and editing process!

Thank you to all who joined us on zoom and we look forward to seeing you next Tuesday 2/3 for a MSU CHM presentation!
